Give Appreciated Securities

Give Appreciated Securities

Many people have discovered the advantages of making a special gift or paying their pledge to their church through appreciated securities — publicly traded stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or mutual funds that have increased in value since purchase.

By making such a gift, you avoid the capital gains tax on the appreciation, and you have the benefit of a charitable deduction on your income tax of the current market value of the appreciated security.

TMF offers a free service that allows you to make a gift to benefit your church or other nonprofit ministry using appreciated securities. TMF receives the securities, sells them, and then sends the proceeds to the intended recipient. TMF also provides the recipient with a confirmation notice so they can provide the donor with a tax receipt.
