A Generous Spirit That Shines for Generations

Dec 10, 2025

“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” — Psalm 100:5

Scott Roberts

This story of generosity began with a father taking his sons to church.

When Scott Roberts was just ten years old, his father took him and his two older brothers to First United Methodist Church in La Porte, Texas. Over time, the early Sunday mornings, hymns, and welcoming handshakes became sacred. Scott’s father’s quiet faith and devotion began to take hold and had a lasting impact.

“My dad was a carpenter and a man of service,” Scott said. “He didn’t just go to church: he gave himself to it, and that profoundly affected me.”

This early example of service — his father’s steady hands, showing up when others didn’t, giving generously and without fanfare — became a blueprint for Scott’s own faith. As an adult, Scott followed a similar path, stepping up to mow the church’s 11-acre property, assisting with repairs, and helping launch a men’s devotional group.

Scott’s vision of the church expanded as he grew older, and he thought deeply about what he could do to help secure the church’s long-term future.

“Some places hold meaning, not just memories,” said Scott. “And when that’s true, you do whatever it takes to protect and pass it on."

Inspired by the impact of another member’s generosity, Scott established an endowment through Texas Methodist Foundation that honors his family and benefits his beloved church and the community it serves — a decision that felt both faithful and forward-looking.

“I found a way to make sure my faith continues to shine through my church for generations to come,” Scott said. “I want this church to be here long after I’m gone, for my daughter and her family and anyone else who needs a place to land.”
