Joyful Ministry Helps Those With Dementia and Their Families Live Lives with Purpose and Hope
Sep 26, 2024
We see Christ at work when we offer a supportive hand to those on a new and uncertain path.
Twenty-eight years ago, Rev. Dean Robinson, a minister at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston, offered just that loving hand. He knew the struggles and debilitating impact of a loved one's memory loss. His experience inspired him to create Amazing Place to support adults and their caregiving families and friends to live full and meaningful lives despite a diagnosis of dementia.
Today, Amazing Place has a state-of-the-art care facility in Houston, Texas, and will open a second campus in Katy, Texas, next spring, made possible by a loan from TMF. In addition to having services, including an evidence-based Day Program for individuals with mild to moderate dementia, Amazing Place is a resource for caregiving families, offering education, counseling, and next-step advice free of charge. The organization also provides community presentations and classes for those interested in brain health, memory preservation, and the aging journey.
"We serve with joy so that our neighbors can live to their full potential with hope and purpose," says Executive Director Tracey Brown. "We are grounded in faith and connected by community."
Amazing Place is governed by sixteen area churches plus five at-large board members. Its work continues to evolve. Recent investments in Texas Methodist Foundation Impact Certificates help Amazing Place deepen its financial strength and long-term sustainability.
